Your mechanic dude probably knows more than I do. But my mechanic dude told me (when he replaced the AFM last year) that cleaning the thing would take the carbon off, and thus damage it irrevocably. He did tell me that some use your trick of moving the wiper, but he tried that with mine for an inordinate amount of time, and did not charge me for the extra time. I told him, just get a new one. He did, and it has been fine ever since.

He attributed the "Vanagon Syndrome" I was experiencing to the worn AFM carbon track. My camper is a 1991 model, newer than yours, but the AFM is the same one or very similar I think.
