I took another look at the regs alluded to in a BC govt website (http://www.drivesmartbc.ca/rvs/operating-rvs-propane) about driving safely. It might be that it is not actually explicitly prohibited to drive with propane on.

It is for sure discouraged. But one of the regs cited was federal (Can) rules about transportation of dangerous goods. Now this seems rather silly, to consider a westy propane tank to be falling under those rules, but a westy gasoline tank would not.

Also kind of rules out propane/nat. gas powered vehicles from the road, doesn't it?

As far as I can see, the only downside to driving with fridge lit is going to petrol stations. I suppose the gasoline vapours around the van would have to be very thick indeed to be ignited by fridge, but hey, might happen?

Clearly people will do what they want regarding matters that most consider safety issues. I wonder why VW chose to ADD the safety warnings regarding driving with the propane valve open sometime between the early to mid 80s and 1991? Could it be that there were "accidents" that needn't have happened or were worse because some folks chose to keep the valve open while driving, and VW elected to add warnings to reduce the company's liability exposure? Just wonderin' ........... .
