Subject: westy rear view mirror - one solution
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed

So the subject came up when I posted about putting in rear overhead cabinet in my camperisation of syncro project. Yeah, I know that cabinet restricts rear view, but I like the storage space and it *is* being installed. Scott (and Karl) suggested I stick on a mirror on the windscreen to get back some rear view, but no one replied with actual tried and tested solutions and results.

I don't like the stick on solution just because of the hassle of getting it right first time.

I remembered someone saying somewhere, maybe the samba? that a loaf rear view mirror and stalk was a direct swap. And that some loafs had a longer than normal stalk. I happen to have a '72 westy parked in the driveway, so I pulled the mirror from it (grab stalk and twist clockwise).

The mirror itself is smaller than the vanagon's, but the stalk is slightly longer (its not one of the super long kind) and it is angled slightly more away from windscreen. The quality of the rubber like plastic around the stalk puts the brown vanagon plastic to shame. The ball joint can be separated and the larger vanagon mirror put onto the loaf's stalk.

Fitted into the vanagon it hangs more vertical, and a little lower. But that small difference is enough to give you a few more degrees of vertical view out of back window.

I'll take pics later and somehow quantify the difference in viewing angles, maybe by photo.

cheers

alistair
