I think you did what I did: mistook an early bay mirror for an early bay WESTY mirror.  The guy in the Samba thread is emphatic about the difference between the two and I, like you, wound up with a bay mirror not appreciably longer than the stock Vanagon mirror.  That is how I wound up operating on my $5 bay mirror to extend it.  If you check that thread again you'll see the bay Westy mirror stalk is significantly longer and has the nub on the backside of it, unlike the mirrors that you and I used.   Stephen
