Hmmm - as far as I remember, the OXS light has nothing to do with the charging circuit. You can turn that off by pushing the reset button with a nail or something similar.

You might be fine if you drive with all the extra electrical loads off.

You could very easily check the length of the brushes by popping out the regulator and brush pack - its just one screw. If the brushes are really short you could possibly get a new one at the local VW dealer or FLAPS.
