what I would do that's easier and no hassle and might help a lot is, remove speedo cables from both ends.. and spray as best you can there into the box with a very high quality penetrating synthetic grease.

I even lubricate sealed bearings with that stuff, sneaks right past the seal edges. I am more suspect of your speedo cables myself.. but it could be the box. Just never heard of one being noisy .. but lots of noisy speedo cables. I lube them from the top, while turning the left front wheel with my foot.. so lubricant has a chance to flow downward in a rotating cable assembly. Works real good.

leaving the wires disconnected won't cause any problems I don't think.

I got an answer to my question from a member concerning my OSX gear box (counter) yesterday and I am wanting to know that after I remove the 4 screws (I presume I will have to remove it from the van to get at it) do I need to put some kind of gasket on when I close it up after squirting it full of grease and also, if I just leave it out and use the longer speedometer cable what do I do with the wires that go to it so that the dash light won't come on with the thing disconnected?

Thanks again list.
