A passport is what I use going to US and back to Canada. I'd suggest a personal cooling fan if no AC for line ups at Border, bring or get AAA (though I bet you have that ;) Tune into AM 730. You might receive it (distance) in time to dodge any major waits at a given border crossing. They have border wait times at certain times during traffic reports. Highway 1 starts to get busy West bound after ~ 2 PM or so. The West side of Vancouver Island is really cool.
