dear those who donot think it applies to them

RIV is also a clearing house for paper work it gives you the proper choices for border crossings and advises what will happen at the usa side ... regardless of what applies here in canada ... and possible exemptions there has to be an application requesting permission to export ... regardless of what happens anywhere to to anyone else there has to be at least three days allowed for the usa border folks to process ... regardless of what you say in documents or mention about the van .. these guys are not stupid and will know it is a camper van .. heck they may even own one and heck they may even be on this list reading this stuff cause they are legit vanagon owners ... i have met one american and one canadian who are vanagon owners and are very aware of the issues and problems with these vehicle ... asked me pointed question s about care and maintenance that only vangon owners would know ...

regardless of what others might say ... usa is very clear that vehicle must be in usa to receive permission to export and it must clear canadian customs at a border crossing with f1 in hand with the vehicle ... destination is irrelevant to border crossing

and lastly ... it is up to you and yours how you bring your vehicles and personal property through situations where the consequence can be losing the vehicle or jail or being banned from the country ... when someone asks for advice about matters that have such severe consequences ... i am bound to advise they do things by the letter of the law as it is detailed ... rather than telling them about all the neat ways they can cut corners ... the last thing would want to read is an email saying they followed certain advice from someone who suggested corners could be cut and they lost vehcile or other personal possessions ... Homeland and Canadian Border Guards have huge powers of discretion i always advise what my daddy told me ... (son of border guard ) and career navy man ... Yes Sir ... No Sir... Three Bags Full Sir ... and have witness him extricate himself from some very sticky situations simply by showing he was following the rules to the letter at the time
