Most natural gas used in this country comes from wells that produce the gas itself, and not as a byproduct of oil wells. The oil that is flamed off from oil production is high sulfur gas. It is not suitable for fuel. It can be cleaned, but the cost exceeds the return, which is why it is flamed. When gas prices are high, more of it is captured and cleaned.

The gaseous fuels burn cleaner because they have a higher hydrogen to carbon ratio than does gasoline. Diesel has a lower hydrogen to carbon ratio than does gasoline. When a hydrocarbon molecule burns, it produces a molecule of water with each 2 hydrogen atoms, and a molecule of carbon dioxide with each carbon atom. It is the combining of the hydrogen with oxygen to form water that actually releases energy. More hydrogen per carbon, more energy, less pollution.
