Michael, for a dealership not to work on older vehicles is common. For a dealership that does work on older vehicles, it may not work on Vanagons. My local VW dealership long ago stopped servicing them, but given its reputation for poor service and disdain for customers, that's no loss. I have access to two good VW specialists and a general shop that does many things well, anyway, without resorting to a dealer. Doing things "by the book" becomes increasingly problematic as vehicles age, and dealerships generally ONLY do things by the book. Surely you know by now that Vanagons often require that things be approached creatively, partly because of the nature of the beast, and partly because of parts availability.
