Over the years, in surveys car salesmen have placed just above child molesters as the most hated folks around, and it has certainly been my experience that this is true. I can't tell you how many fights I got into at the local VW dealer (Lee Volkswagen in Springfield, VA.) not only with salesman, but most often with the service writer. My mother's 1969 Squareback, less than a year old, battery cracked and leaked all over the back floor literally eating the carpeting, Lee VW said the battery was covered but not the carpet-huge fight, carpet was replaced for free. Again in 1975, bought a Dasher with optically distorted windshield, again dealer said they wouldn't replace it (actually, the service writer looked through the windshield and "couldn't see anything wrong" ) huge fight AND a call to VWoA and the windshield was replaced. I could go on and on. As for the service writers, a guy I knew was promoted to that job a the dealership where he worked (Chrysler) and he told me how excited he was that he could now make "real money" because the more repairs he "sold" the more his commission would be. I'm sure this guy never sold any unnecessary repairs to unsuspecting folks, though-yeah right. Even mechanics, i'm sorry to say, can't always be trusted. I just had one of my vehicles Virginia state inspected back in March, and the inspector told me my front brakes were right on the edge, I'd better schedule an appointment for a brake job. Instead I went to NAPA and bought front pads, only to find when I went to change them they still had about 50% And this was a shop I've gone to for years, granted mostly for state and emissions testing because i do most of my own repairs. Still, I was disappointed. Yeah, I know everyone (including me) is just "trying to make a living", still it doesn't make it right.

Interesting comment. Why is the sales guy a 'scum bag'? He goes to work, just like you (or not), sells cars. I don't have any friends who are salesmen per-sey but hey, it's a job. Or are you one of those folks that hates dealing with car salesmen because you think you are getting took?

It's one of the few times in life I have the power to walk away with my money after making a decision that this person isn't giving me a great deal. If he gives me a great deal, I pay. What a damned nice equal relationship. You do your homework and you won't get took.

Same as the guy who is the service manager. Know what's wrong with your vehicle before you take it in. If that's not possible, get a second opinion and decide who you want to pay.

As far as power steering lines.. Be a MAN. Grow strong forearms. *L*

Only reason I take any of my cars back to a dealer is for a recall. And I now have two cars (2003 Mitsubishi and 1998 New Beetle) both with air bag lights on, which now won't pass Virginia safety inspection. Second time in a year the air bag light has been on with the New Beetle. I'll just keep the old low tech Vanagon! Jeff > > > > Jeff Stewart >

Where ever you are, there you be. Unless you're driving my van, in which case, you ain't got there yet.
