I knew Bob. Not well, but well enough for him to invite me to his shop a couple times to help me rebuild my Type 2's blown engine.

I remember him as a cranky man who did not suffer fools well. The crankiness was due to an illness that he did not know he had, and which had not yet been diagnosed.

His impatience with those he considered fools was due to his odd expectation that people would use their brains. He became impatient with me many times.

He pissed me off, he offended me, he told me to just give up.

The man was a Zen master. I was not an ideal student but I understood that I was in the presence of someone whose knowledge in certain areas was deep and thorough. Because of him I pushed myself well out of my comfort zone in that engine rebuild. I guess I wanted to impress him.

He's moved on to the next stage of his journey. May he find happiness.
