I haven't got one anymore, but I suspect it's M8x1.0. Check it with a regular M8 bolt from the van -- that should be M8x1.25; so if the diameter matches and the threads are finer it should be M8x1; if diameter and threads both match it's M8x1.25. I'd be surprised if it was a tapered thread, though that's not impossible. I wouldn't get into this, but since no one else has answered...

I have doorknobs like that in my house, and (at least the ones I have) wouldn't be very comfortable to push from the side, as you would be doing with a shifter. You've probably thought of this already, but just in case.
