Hi Michael, I noticed something very similar on my '88 and took some 600 grit paper and wet-sanded all the connections. This seems to have removed some oxidation and made everything run cooler. For good measure I drilled a few holes in a horizontal line below and above it, with the idea of providing some cooling airflow. Not sure that helps, but the cleaning sure did.
