I take it they don't subscribe to DIN VDE 0298 part 4, as quoted on p. 792 of Bosch Automotive Handbook, 4th Edition? It gives max continuous of 54 A @30C/86F, 38.3 A @50C/122F for PVC-insulated wire with 70C/158F max working temp.

Given engine-compartment temps, VW is violating those limits by fusing a 6 mm^2 wire at 50 amps.
