  Ok, just pulled the cover & checked underneath.

  The fusible link has been replaced with a 12 volt 50amp circuit
breaker, connections appear clean and the insulation shows no
indication of breaking down.  I ran the AC with the circulation fan
set at position 4 for around 10 minutes.  Wiring gets pretty warm, but
not alarmingly so, IMHO.
