My personal inclination would be to build a frame of wood or metal that attaches inside the box, and fasten the inverter to that. Not to say you can't do it the other way, but if you do make sure the protective coatings are just as good as what's already there. Fender wells take a beating from sand, pebbles, road salt, bits of glass and so forth. My old Saab 96 had a little hole rusted through the right rear fender well just outboard of the seat, and once in a great while it would send a pebble whizzing past me to bounce off the windshield. First time was quite a surprise.
