hey .. any idea how many times in 40 + years of working on cars I have rigged something up, done the final installation, only to find out right away, or later sometime, that it doesn't work or isn't exactly right ?

too many to count, is how many.

so I always install and test-operate things in prototype setup first .. then when I'm 'sure' it's right ..I do a final-final installation.

like I am always telling subaru conversion people don't final wrap the ecu wiring harness until you see the engine run right. Don't even install it in the van until you see the engine right. And I have pulled out a wiring harness after installing it because it was 'suppossed' to be right .. I shoulda run that one not installed first .......since I had to just pull it right back out. Someone paid to have it done ....so wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt .. but ....nope, shoulda run it just laying near the engine first, would have saved an hour taking it back out.

and speaking of things not really right ....I won't say anything about how often I find things done wrong on vanagons ..but it's like 50 times a week. Like a hose clamp just laying on a cooling system connection, but not clamped onto the hose. Heck, I've seen that on a fuel line on a waterboxer engine .. running, but no hose clamp even, on one hose. People worry about fuel hoses and fire ...the first step is make sure there is a clamp on every connection ! Duh. lol, shouldn't have to even mention such a thing , but ..you know.

I recommend not letting anyone touch your vanagon .. Near as I can tell normal humans and 'shops' are incapable of getting things right more than about 80 % of the time working on cars and vans.
