I've been a licensed aircraft mechanic since '81, and was taught to use this method on aircraft cases. I've rebuilt many engines, and never once tried this trick. The only time the case-split leaks is when some PO used a screwdriver to pry the case-halves apart. I've never had one leak at this split. I agree with idea of "not fixing a problem that never existed in the first place".
