hi, Very 'usually' ...something will be different when you get a car back after loaning it, particularly a 20+ year old can-be-idiosyncratic VW van.

there are two parts. the common wear part is the plastic electrical part of it .. under $ 20 for sure, from most vendors. of vanagons parts.

the other part, the key and lock cylinder ( see Bentley , it's a little hard to find in that book ) ...usually/hopefully that part is good for the life of the van.

it's always bad practice to hang a lot of weight, like other keys, a biner, and a pen knife off your igntion key while driving. Just a key fob and a couple of other keys is about right.

You want a new electrical part of the igntion switch on hand .. as part of your regular vanagon self-rescue and troubleshooting kit.

how about this one.. shared this before, I let a customer use my van, she wanting to be a good appreciative person, gets the fuel tank filled. They pump the gas for you in Oregon .. not allowed to pump your own gas, so the pump jocky sticks the igntion key right into the locking gas cap and bends the igntion key . It's not wise to let someone else drive something you really care about, or is old/can-be-delicate .. they have good intentions, but half the time the manage to tweak something the wrong way or whatever. I let a guy use a diesel vanagon one day for about 10 miles, and it was different when I got it back.

about 15 bucks on the electrical part of the Ign Sw. Van Cafe is who I like for that kind of part for vanagon lovers in places like Texas.
