I've had two air-cooled Vanagons (one of them purchased new in 1981) and know for sure that there's no oil cooler other than the one tucked away under the engine tin. Don't know what you saw in that junkyard. Pumping oil all the way from the rear of the vehicle to the nose and then back just doesn't make sense and most add-on oil coolers for the air-cooled Vanagons housed the new cooler somewhere in the rear of the van.

Where were those junkyards, by the way? I'm looking for a part.
