There may be differences of opinion out there, but I prefer the 1.9 cooling system. When I did my 2.1 conversion back in 1997 I found it a bit pricey to convert to the 2.1 style. I've had no problems with my set up since (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). Runs fine, doesn't overheat, etc.

The coolant "tower" (as you call it) is a hard piece to find in the original plastic (I have two spares stashed away) and they are unique to the auto trans models. I would find it easier to spring the $200 than to try to find and pay for all the 2.1 stuff in the long haul.
