As an unreserved fan of wool I'll say - go for it!

Wool doesn't have to be itchy at all (think Merino) and has to be the most pleasant, comfortable, natural fabric invented (hmmm...). Or just go sheepskin.

Regarding durability, modern merino wools seem to be doing pretty well. I sit here typing while wearing an Icebreaker shirt (280 weight) which I'd calculate I've worn at least 500 days (along with many nights) and still shows no significant wear.

If you itch-myth promulgators haven't tried wool recently you need to.

Never met an unhappy sheep.
