Hi, its seems from responses I have received that the protective pipe was standard on late model syncros here in north america (89 - 91) its may have been available earlier in Europe (an option), and it may have been standard on 16" syncros. In any case, I think it might be a worthwhile addition. I did have some shifting issues last year, when driving in slush and snow and dropping temps. Build up of ice on shift rod made it difficult to shift. I think it was mainly due to the U-joint being exposed.
