It's probably not as interesting as it sounded Jim - I may have been being a bit dramatic :)

The wire I used to jumper the connection points ont he connector for the temp II sensor - the original problem. While in there I realized the plug that we had placed on one of the hose holes on the air filter boot was missing (that's what I can't explain really - don't have the right words) - this is where the bathtub stopper and tape came into play.

So again maybe a bit dramatic on my part - but I've still arrived :)
