AAA is (or was, not sure today) regional, so your experience in one area of the country may be different in another. At least that was my experience many years ago with AAA Mid-Atlantic (VA-MD-DC) when I called (as a current member) and asked to be upgraded to the Plus membership. I was rather rudely told that Plus memberships were "invitation only" after being a regular member for X years. At that point I canceled my AAA membership and went with Good Sam, which I have used only a few times but have been very happy with. Also, years ago the fine print on AAA's 100 mile tow said "to the nearest authorized repair shop, UP TO 100 miles" which they explained to me that if a shop they deemed qualified was 15 miles away, that's where they were going to tow you, any further was at your cost.
