I long ago learned that I was capable of losing car keys and thus being locked away from my transportation, and that I was equally capable of locking my keys inside the car. After doing so many miles from the nearest locksmith or help of any kind more than one time, I started carrying extra keys, one set in each front pants pocket. So, I can, very easily, leave the cap with the key laying on the gas pump, and climb in and start the car. I no longer can lock the keys inside the car, since the camper driver's door cannot be locked from outside without the key, and my Prius yells very loudly if I attempt to lock the door with the key (an electronic fob) inside. But I can sure drive away and leave the cap and key for the camper. I did it this summer in Montana, and had to turn around and drive 20 miles each way to retrieve it and get back to where I'd gotten.
