Your '84 has a 5 spd? Was it a diesel? VAGCAT online shows the '84 diesel having a dynamic oil pressure unit in inst. cluster. But as you say, it's not present. Sounds like you only want one oil pressure switch connected to the stock idiot light so.....

Sounds like you have the high and low pressure switch on your ABA/1.8 head combo.

On the 2 switch system, the switch that controls the light only (not light/buzzer combo) is open until engine is running. i.e. engine off, ign. on, the lifted ground actuates the electronics on the dynamic unit making the light flash. That switch logic is reverse to the single switch system. On that system, switch is closed until engine is running. (see P97.56 current track 29)

My guess is that if you want to run just one wire (NO dynamic oil pressure unit) you need a properly rated switch (bar) that is closed when engine off, ign. on. On my ABA, I *think* this 'light only" switch would be installed on the head as per the DV engine. With the right switch installed, put your VOM between it and ground. Engine off, continuity. Engine running, no continuity. Then check continuity between wire in engine bay and cluster to ensure correct wire goes to idiot light, then connect it all up.

I don't know if a switch from a single switch WBX or diesel would suffice but as long as it's pressure rating is correct and is normally closed until engine running, it should work.

FWIW, I installed the WBX dynamic oil pressure unit. I scratched my head re: the logic but it's not too hard to do.
