Thanks ken, thats what i needed to hear... I was looking at the etka at work and thought something was missing. Now i see that it pressed on.. A rookie move on my part, but lesson learned... Hopefully i can get a 2wd seal today and get the van going tonight.. I may just pull the pulley off my 2wd parts van and keep the syncro pulley intact..

Thank you, Jay Lefstein. Sent from my mobile device.

> Jay, yes there is a different seal for the Syncro behind the crank pulley and that is what has caused your quickly destroying the new seal. If you remove your main pulley again (how are you doing this?), you will see on the back of the pulley there is an additional metal piece that is pressed onto the back of the pulley where the pulley rides against the seal. You can easily remove this part with a puller and now you have the 2wd version of the pulley. You can use the normal, cheap, and readily available seal and get back on the road. If you want to switch back just be sure to be gentle with the collar that you took off and you can put it back later. The special syncro seal is only really needed if you are going to go off-roading and wade your Vanagon in water that comes up to the engine block. This special seal keeps the water out along with the fact that the transmission is sealed to the engine with permatex and there is a breather system in place for the transmission vent and the hole that is near the flywheel (top left) that you can see from the engine bay (near the clutch slave area). > > Getting a new "syncro" only oil seal may be problematic. I haven't priced one in a few years but they were around $100 the last time I did and getting hard to get then. If you aren't planning on doing any wading with your van any time soon, removing the collar from the back of the pulley and installing the normal seal would be the best way to go. > > Hope this helps, > > Ken Wilford > John 3:16 > www.vanagain.com > > > On 9/19/2010 7:51 PM, Jay lefstein wrote: >> ok so ...it is for sure not the oil pressure switch, replaced it a >> while back and checked it durring this process.. i guess i should do a >> compression check.. >> >> i took it all appart again... under 20 mins ;)... guess 3 times a >> charm.. >> >> I did lube the seal when installed it >> >> anyways the inside of the new seal had torn right off... which me >> think John game me the wrong seal... oh well i guess i should have >> checked it out closer.. >> >> the engine may have 275,000 kms on it... i am at least the 3rd owner >> and no very little about it's history ( but i will steer it into the >> future the best i can ) >> >> I have another breather tower and seal i will put on it when i get >> another crank seal.. >> >> thanks >> for all the quick replies... i off to catch the greyhound...it's >> almost costing me more then running my syncro down to the city!!!! >> >> I will update you guys as soon as i get the seal >> >> thanks guys >> Jay >> >> >> On 19-Sep-10, at 4:09 PM, Tom Hargrave wrote: >> >>> Have you done a compression test and checked for excessive blowby?
