Good call, Bob. I just checked the Sewfine catalog and there's nothing like a padded panel there.

In the 1987 Vanagon brochure, the interior shot of the Westfalia shows the bed extended. The fabric for the portion of the bed over the engine hatch is the same as the interior panel on the rear hatch.

Some Baywindow Westies had a bit of upholstery on either side of the bed (but not on the rear hatch panel.

It's possible -- maybe even likely -- that the one in the brochure was made especially for the photo shoot.
