I will definitely be doing a 1.8L I-4 in one of my vanagons this spring. The donor car is a 1990 golf we have owned for a year and it has a strong engine with less than 100000KM on it (60K miles). Just need to locate a few more bits and pieces: diesel bellhousing, flywheel, starter and oil pump.

If I can find a dual-downpipe exhaust I will go that way too but as-is the engine will still be a considerable improvement over a high-milage WBX.
