Damon,

Welcome to the list! A good thing to do is hook up some wires to the 2 outside brass terminals on the back of the gauge. Make them long enough to extend out of the instrument pod to where you can attach a voltmeter to them while you're driving. You want to see about 10 volts to the gauge. If you see less than 10v, look at the blue flexy printed circuit from the voltage regulator (small, square black transistor? with 3 legs on the back side of the tach cluster) for any weak connection points.

Another thing that sometimes helps these intermittent problems is using a contact cleaner on the large plug and the blue flexy that it connects to.
