hi don, I wrote to you once explaining the OP sw. on the oil filter flange, if it's what it originally was.. is reverse logic of what you want for a regular OP warning circuit on an early van. Don't mess with that OP switch. It doesn not supply ground when there is no oil pressure, like you want.

what you would want to see is ground supplied by the OP sw at the end of the head. rig up a test light so it's looking for ground. if the head OP sw does not supply ground, find another OP sw or whatever you need to do, to have an OP sw there that supplies ground.

to check your dash circuit, ground the blue/blk van's OP wire . the dash light should be on, key off.

if you really have 10W .. wow. must mean 10Wsomething , like 10W30.. I don't see how lighter oil cleans or flushes better really. Some cheaper oil to run for the first hour or so of a new engine is a great idea though.

I can't say this enough .. ignore that there is any OP sw on the oil filter flange !!

replace that with a bolt or plug. it just so happens the diesel and inline four flywheel mounting bolts are the same thread as that OP sw ...they make good plugs for the flange threaded fittings. Some lock-tite as a sealant perhaps.

a basic oil pressure circuit is REAL SIMPLE.. not any more complicaed than a tail light. if OP is below whatever the threashold is .. it's about 7 psi ( convert the bar to psi for the actualk # but it's close to that ) .. the switch provides ground, turning on the light. right at the threashold it will flicker.

here's a *perfect* method to set the timing . as long as it idles fairly smoothy.. turn dist counter clockwise advancing timing until it's *way* advanced ... like when, idle speed doesn't go up as your turn it more, you're probably at 45 degrees TDC.. then turn it clockwise .. until it's *way* too retarded and almost dying. do that back and forth a few times, put the distributor right in the middle of those two extremes.. the timing will be nigh perfect. if it pings, retard a bit of course. I'd run mid-grade at first, sorting it out, since your CR might be higher than normal.

have fun ! Scott www.turbovans.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don Hanson" <dhanson928@GMAIL.COM> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Sent: Saturday, September 18, 2010 11:19 AM Subject: Update and question inline VW Van block swap (in progress)
