Subject: Motor mount broken bolt 84GL manual 4 speed
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

I have started the process of changing the motor mounts. I came across a couple of interesting. Most everything seemed to be together however there were a couple of loose bolts. Looking at the pully end of the engine, the top driver side bolt and the bottom center bolt which connect the mount assembly to the engine were not all the way in. Further investigation showed that the top bolt was broken and the bottom bolt was just loose. The bolt is broken just below the surface of the motor by about 1/16 inch. The same bolt on the passenger side was not hard to back out. As it stands right now, I will have to remove the cat and muffler to get in and do the drill work to remove the bolt end unless someone might have a better suggestion. Don't yet know how tight this end of the bolt is in the block. Might be able to Dremel a slot in it and it might back out since there is no stress on it. Not sure if I can get a cutoff wheel in there yet. The other option as it stands right now is to drill a hole and use a bolt extracter. If anyone has experience with this, I would like to hear from them. Based on the broken bolt, I would probably get some new bolts. I am guessing that these were not either properly tightened or there was such a jerk on the engine that it broke the one bolt.

William
