For the really HD oriented volks, I use potato conveyor belt stock(think Idaho potato processing plants). It comes in different widths, thicknesses, & can be cut to size. I have a 3/8" thick piece cut to fit the bed of by DC-bomb proof-very heavy weight about $130 from your local industrial rubber supply store. Go into one & see what works for your needs, or simply order ready made vanagon sizes from GW for the cargo floor, behind the rear seat, & 3 locations in the front. I have all, & they are great for keeping your carpet or rear westy mattress pad from getting trashed.

YMMV,

Mr. BZ-rubber mats, a volk's best friend?
