hi, check the CV joint screws are tight, first thing. I doubt adding some grease caused a problem .. you added one tube for 4 cv's. I put about 1/3rd of a tube in each CV joint and boot... black molygraph cv joint grease. and I fill the flange 'bowls' ... Iv'e seen many dry cv joints. is it a hole in a boot ? I would think cheap boot in that case possibly, unless there was external damage. does the flange on the trans move up and down much ? It shouldn't. Occaisaonlly I find them loose. Last one I fixed on a van .. a spring washer wasn't installed there , and the flange was loose .. and gear oil can get past the flange and slpines there sometimes .. though normally it doesn't. if one was overgreased massively, I'd expect grease to come out somewhere. and..... I put quite a bit of grease in them , and have never seen a case of overgreasing causing grease to come out. if screws are good and tight .. flange isn't loose... my attention at the moment goes to the boot. though they're usually not a problem. and .. no kidding ...it's getting hard to get vanagon parts made as well as the original ones were. And unlike old vw buses.. vanagon cv joint boots last nearly indefenitely. I just install very good used original ones and never have a boot problem. see what kind of band or clamp it has on the smaller end of the boot too. I don't find a need for much there really , but check. Just got back from a 4,500 mile roadtrip without incident. However, when parked in the garage, I noticed a leak on the concrete floor. Looked up there....definitely leaking from the interface between inner CV Joint and 4 speed manual transmission. Wiped the floor clean, and next day a new spot (about 4 inches in diameter) reappears WITHOUT having started engine or moving vehicle. So not good news..... I recently (about 6,000 miles ago) new Axles (Lobro CV Joints, rebuilt by GoWesty) on both sides. I did add CV grease to the exterior of the new joints; they were wiped clean for shipping and GoWesty concurred that they needed additional CV grease. I used 1 tube for all 4 joints when I did the installation. Did I overdo it and blow out a seal of some kind? Or just coincidence? I had previously (about 30,000 miles ago) replaced the original gear oil with Redline MT-90 per List wisdom. Car and motor and transmission all have now 186,000 of gentle freeway miles mostly. Everything shifts, runs, sounds normal. So, before I head to the mechanic, I wanted to get some advice....what is the probable problem, and what is the probable fix? Can it be done with transmission in place and still connected to engine? Any idea of what this might cost? Rich San Diego |
