As I stated earlier, you need the VIN from the original car to search at the
dealer and get the code.
Some stereos have the ability to change the factory code.
If this has been done and is not written down....you will not be able reset the
stereo.

I don't know if it works on VW this way, but in my Acura, the reset was
holding down, I think, the MODE button and entering the code - which
happened to be the last 4 digits of the VIN.
If that's the case, I'm not sure what you can do since you don't know what
make/model it even came out of short of taking it to a dealer and seeing if
they can find out. Hopefully it's something different for VW. Standard reset
codes for a variety of electronics is often '0000' or like you've already
tried '1111.' You could also try the last 4 digits of the serial number, if
there's one listed on the unit somewhere.
