not OT since your ABA engine is in a vanagon.
could be an assembly mistake..
could be all sorts of things.
1990 subaru EJ22 engines ( often fitted to vanagons ) are known to have an
oil problem ..
subaru fixed it for 1991.
it happens.
or maybe someone just drove the snot out of it from day one..like no
break-in period at all ..
drove it hard cold, etc.
Some people are really rough on cars.
some people even try to blow new cars up while on waranty, just for fun.
oh ...and manufacturing tolerances ...
or machines gettting out of adjustent a little...
I think it's likely that of every say 50,000 engines of a give type that
some number of them will be far less oil-burning, quiet running, long
lasting etc. that others of the same exact type from the same factory.
If I didn't say that right, I mean there are bound to be a few rotten
apples in basic car engines in mass production.
