At once, I have to agree... no humor here, It's one of those places that's worth the trip just to sit on a bench on the south rim and stare at it for awhile then drive home. I've done that twice, the north rim (my 3rd trip) is ok but not as good for just staring at that giant hole in the ground.

http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/cg-sr.htm shows a variety of different camping options including dispersed camping >>Dispersed Camping: Camping "at-large" is permitted in the national forest outside the park. Camping must be at least 0.25mile/ 0.4 km away from Highway 64. <<

Google tells me it's a 24 hour drive, around 1400 miles from my house no matter which route I take. ( "Village Loop Rd, Grand Canyon, AZ 86023 (Grand Canyon National Park)" in the google search box, then click on maps and then directions and put your town, state in the "from" slot ).

Anyone have enough experience with camping by the south rim to offer a suggestion on a good place to meet if you and several friends (say from an internet list) wanted to have a gathering at the south rim? Something very informal, one of those 'bring your own camping gear' and let's meet up at XXXX by the South Rim of the Grand Canyon on a specific weekend?

Anyone?
