There are three campgrounds that serve the south rim. Desert View is the best, but it can't be reserved and I think it closes in winter. Ten-X is the NFS campground, a few (less than ten) miles from the rim.

Mather Campground is right at Grand Canyon Village; you can walk to the rim in about 20 minutes. Year round. There are several group campgrounds for up to 50 people, $50 a night. I take honors students there once or twice a year.
