hi, yes VW did sell westies with aux battery installed, perhaps those living in the states did not get them, but they were offered elsewhere. Fancy that eh?
I believe you can see wiring for second battery in the Bentley manual (staring at page 97.137). If you don't have a manual, take a look at this page for some ideas

and yes, there are a number of different ways of doing it yourself, from a simple relay or solenoid through to an "automatic charging relay" . alistair
