Now that it's available again, there really is only one choice if you don't need a emissions stuff (CAT, 02 sensor, EGR). For the first time in a few years, I once again have the European spec OEM exhaust system for air cooled Vanagons. This is what Volkswagen put on Vanagons outside of the U.S., where emissions gear was not required. The kit consists of a very heavy duty German made Ernst muffler, plus a tailpipe and hardware kit. There is no comparison between this and the extractor systems that are your only alternative. While the extractor systems are admittedly cheaper (we sell them for $112, versus $219 for the OE system), one side-by-side look and you immediately know why. Whereas the extractor systems are generally Chinese made and of marginal quality (as would be expected for $100), the OE system is heavy gauge steel that will probably last you 4 or 5 times as long. The problem, historically, has been one of cost and availability. This muffler is not sold in the U.S. and has become rather expensive even in Germany. Over the last few years the price had crept up so high that even I stopped importing them. But this June I scored a great deal and was able to once again bring some in from Germany at a reasonable cost. It's worth grabbing one, while you can, if you need a new exhaust system or think you will soon.
