It might be that the button is stuck on, latched under the fascia, well I guess you figured that out :)

Bugger around with the button more, see if you can't get it unstuck (the perfect narrow but blunt pointed tool helps)

PS I am not sure if the golf clock plastic backing surround will work, you might have to go deeper.
