page 97.109 in Bentley, for 87 Digifant .. clearly shows fuel gauge sender on current track 71 with violet/black wire going to T14, pin 7. T14 is the main instrument cluster connection on the right . Your fuel sender wire will be there, not floating around somewhere.

I can't think of any wires that go to/from the instrument cluster, except those at T14. If you have odd wires to or from the instrument cluster, perhaps someone has 'modified' something there.
