Well this is a little Jetta/Vanagon specific... but I guess there are a few of us on the Vanagon list so

I called my parts source and local experts on hot rod inline VWs...Techtonic Tuning in Salem, Or. to pick the brain of the fellow who's been helping me with tech advice as I've done this re-configuration of my inlne motor....

When I told him I'd installed an Oil Temp and an Oil pressure gauge..he goes..."Oh Jeeze, you shouldn't have done that"...in a joking manner. He says the inline VW motors are hot runners, but without the gauges, I would never know that and I would never worry.... .. He suggested I hook up the oil/water heat exchanger. He also suggested I get a timing light...He said something like (you WBX guys, plug your ears here...) "These aren't Vanagon motors, these are highly tuned and should be carefully timed because they are quite sensitive to timing and will overheat if they aren't right..." or something on those lines...

So I hooked up the cooler and got the numbers and posted them. And yes, those VW engineers did good, I should never ever question them again... (now, why did they make a wire that pushes a valve shut for the heater in front? If that works so well, why did they not put a couple of pad on the back bumper for "Push Ropes"? Never mind.
