Ten years is a *very* long time in the internet hosting business. There are, however, plenty of examples of services like this that have been around for close to that amount of time. You also have to take into account that since 2000 there have been three major updates and one complete revision to the network layer used to provide connectivity via named addresses. Guys like TinyURL and is.gd have been around for a while, offer a very excellent service (which really wasn't a necessity until 2001), and will probably outlast the destinations they're often used to reference.

The biggest problem with URL shortening is that the firms that provide such services seem to come and go. Hence, ten years from now the archived URL is almost guaranteed to be 404. (As will the original URL I suspect.)
