Craig,

I'm really sorry that you had to learn this lesson on your own. Many folks who've been down this road tried to steer you away from this situation.

At this point, it's ALL on you.

1.) Contact local law enforcement and have them determine if it is a stolen vehicle. 2.) If not, (and you had best make dxxned sure that it's not), trace the plates to the last registered owner and attempt to get a bill of sale from them. Send registered letter to address on registration. If returned unopened, keep it unopened as a record that you attempted to contact. Contact the lienholder and ask for a release of interest. Note.... Either might simply ask you to return THEIR property to them. You have no recourse. As they are the last owner of record, they own it. 3.) If you can procure a bill of sale and a release of interest, then http://www.its-titles.com/ is your next stop.

BTDT. Took three years and three hundred dollars, but I do own my abandoned Westy free and clear.

You can call the seller out, but truth be told, I suspect that it will make no difference to the situation.

(Moral of the story: If it seems too good to be true. It is.)
