The Sportsmobile made with Ford/Chevy/Dodge, especially with a diesel, seem to be a popular replacement for previous Volks owners who got tired of the maintenance and power issues with our beloved vans. I know 3 here locally who made the switch and although they acknowledge the $$ factor, they really like being able to do the same thing with them, that they used to do with the Vanagon Campers they had.

The man I bought my van from now has an Astro Van which he sent to Canada to have outfitted with removable camper/kitchen stuff, then puts seats in it for winter skiing trips. It's an AWD version and he admits he can't quite get into some of the rougher spots he could with the Syncro Westy, he and his family like the reliability, versatility, and overall performance.

Bob
