When mine got balky (even blew a fuse) I just pulled the knob and sprayed a bit of this in near the shaft:

... then worked the knob rapidly through the positions several times. Worked and has continued to work since (so far). Maybe I just got lucky but easy enough to try before doing surgery.

BTW -- I had that stuff because it was what I used on the AFM track.
