I have a device that goes in series with the sparkplug wire. It has its own internal spark gap that you can see fire as the plug fires. The maker also claims that the color of the spark tells you your fuel richness but I just use it to verify spark.

you watch the color of the flame inside the combustion chamber with this device.. goes in a spark plug hole. For mixture adjusting, and disagnosis. I've never bothered to use it yet ...someone just gave it to me a while back.
